Teenagers assume that parents these days expect way too much from them. It is irritating when they start comparing their kids to other kids. There are too many expectations which sometimes leads to "Rebellious Kids". Instead of accepting their child's interests in various things, they will start putting their decisions and opinions without even listening to the kids.
I remember once, actually its not once, it happens quite often. "Why are your grades not as high as I expected? Why can't you be like other kids? Why can't you be like your cousin, your best friend or some other person?" This list of questions goes on which really annoys and irritates me. "Well, I say, what if that's not something I'm best at? Instead, why don't you look for "positive interests" in me?" Sometimes I ignore the situation but when I really think I need to confront this, I do! I give them an example of something like: "What if I start saying the same things to you? No one is perfect, even you! What if I say, Oh! Why don't you dress like your friend? She/ he has a better sense of style." Then usually the answer to my question is "Why copy others and be someone who you're not?" Then , I tell them to apply their answers to the questions they ask me before they compare me with anyone else.
I think most parents behave this way because they're worried about their children making choices and they "might not" be aware of that, it really bugs us and everyone is not the same. Being stressed, worried and comparing will not lead to the results of their child performing the best in everything. In other words, you can't be perfect in everything. Parents should also accept their child's flaws and be proud of what they do accomplish!
I totally agree with you, this happens to me all the time. I think parents need to understand that we can make our own choices now, everyone is different in their own way. They can't just accept us to act like someone we are not.
ReplyDeleteIm glad u agree! This is really something that needs to stop...:P
DeleteHappens to me all the time! I hate it. Parents should stop expecting so much out of us like you said no one is perfect!
ReplyDeleteTrue. It gets annoying when your parents compare you to your sister, your cousins, and their friends' daughters. I understand that they want you to be better, but they really don't need to put it that way.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on that last sentence!
DeleteVery true! it's a lot for a kid to take in but at the same time our parents are all just worried about us because they watch the news and see what is going on out there so they want us to do the best we can, sometimes a little too much, but they do that so we can achieve our goals and be able to stand on our 2 feet when we are on our own. Also so we can do something with our lives and make a living .
ReplyDeleteWell, I guess I agree with you on this because it happens to me too. I guess, it's their way of trying to make you more responsible and mature in some way. But I agree with Ada's comment, they "really don't need to put it that way".
ReplyDeletei honestly hate it when my parents do that, they just dont understand the fact that we dont want to be like others. i love my parents do death but when they compre me with other girls who get better marks in class, who dress better, who are very smart, they make me mad and i wish they could understand that i cant be like them because i want to be myself and what they expect from us is tooooo much. <3
ReplyDeleteParents can be the the worst hypocrites. They tell you to do something, but they dont do it themselves
ReplyDeleteThis is so true, many people have placed many high expectations on me, especailly parents.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. Parents set such high expectations of us that it gets hard for us to focus even if we are doing good. Parents will always do whats best for us but sometimes it just gets too extreme!
