*Ba-dum* What’s that you ask? It would be the constant
ring tone that has been going on since the release of iPhones and other types of fancy phones. I think people should lessen their “quality time” with their
phone while hanging out with their friends. What I mean by quality time is the constant check
on tweets and status updates. It sends your friend a message that says, “Hey, I’ll pay more attention to you,
but only once you start growing buttons and get more high-tech.” It really
bothers me because sometimes they don’t listen while the other person is talking, and
just replies something along the lines of “Umm… What?” when they happen to ask for an opinion. Wouldn't you feel the rejection of your friend from that? The phone will not vanish through thin air like Houdini. I’m
sure you can risk taking your eyes off of it once in a while.
One
day, while I was bored in class i decided to scan the room, while doing so, I noticed these people talking to each other.
Surprise… surprise, mid conversation one of them decides to pull out their phone. As the other person was talking, the other was off in their
own little techno world ignoring just about what their friend is talking about.
Due to all their attention on the device, when it came to the time he needed to
respond, he didn’t know what to say. His friend realizing that he wasn’t
listening seemed pretty offended. I found that it was completely rude and
inconsiderate of his friend’s feelings.
Though
I think that this action is completely unnecessary, I don’t think I have ever
directly confronted anyone about this behaviour. I have discussed it aloud in a
general way, but I have never really addressed a person about the
behaviour because it is partially intimidating to confront a friend about
it.
I think
people engage in this behaviour because many of us have become very dependent
in technology and devices. I can personally say that I, myself, am very
technology dependant, but that doesn’t mean that I agree with dedicating all my time on my phone while I'm with a friend, is okay. I think that everyone is
partially, if not fully aware of their behaviour, but they don’t consider what
others may possibly feel. They may just brush it off as a normal activity.
What I
think may be the leading cause for this behaviour is social networking sites, and
the constant releases of new technology and devices. For example: Facebook,
Twitter, and devices such as the iPhone 5. One thing people could do to limit
their use of technology is turning off the devices when hanging out with their
friends. Another solution would be logging out of the sites that are constantly
urging and taunting you to take out your phone and checking it every five
seconds. I’m sure there are many ways to limit your use of technology. So, take
your time and think about what your friends might be feeling when you’re
“hanging out” with them, but spending more time and focus on your
phone/device.
