Germs & Germaphobes by Alyssa Ang

Why would anyone want germs? As a mysophobe, or more commonly known as a germaphobe, avoiding objects that may seem unsanitary is a must! Various bacteria, viruses, etc, spread like wildfire, and it only takes one individual to start this reaction. The majority of people should practice sanitary habits more often.

Countless beings forget to wash their hands, after using the washroom. One particular experience of mine occurred at a mall’s public washroom. As I was washing my hands, I noticed a lady emerge from a stall, fixing her pants. Expecting her to head straight for a sink, I moved so as to not block the soap dispenser. Instead, she heads back inside the stall to get some tissue. She then blows her nose and proceeds to the trash bin. As she opened the bin, other trash, including used tissues fell out. After cleaning up the trash, she exits the washroom. It irritated me to a great extent knowing the door knob/handle was now contaminated with germs. Not only the knob, but anything she touches will have germs. Being the germaphobe I am, I got a piece of paper towel, (from the automatic dispenser) and used the paper towel like a glove, to open the door.

I’ve encountered numerous people with similar habits and I have politely suggested more hygienic choices, especially to people I know, be it a friend, a relative, a family member, etc. Some shook it off and ignored it, and some agreed to my suggestions. I try as often as I can to promote cleanliness. However, it is up to the person to decide. After all, my standard for being clean will differ, compared to someone else’s.

In my opinion, one of the most common reasons why people behave this way is the lack of concern. Most people are unconcerned about practicing sanitary habits and are careless about how germs are easily spread. Furthermore, some assume that this is an accepted common habit, we humans share. I also think since germs aren’t visible to the naked eye, we depend on the visibility to warn us of something dirty. If there was a speck of dirt on someone’s hand, the immediate reaction would be, “I should wash it off!” However, since germs are so tiny, we cannot depend on warnings or signs.

As mentioned earlier, not everyone will agree or cooperate in practicing more sanitary habits. Although, I think it would be an effective way to encourage the details and specifics of good hygiene. It can help prevent the spreading of illnesses too. Simply wash your hands with soap, and gently scrub, instead of rinsing with water. Carry a hand sanitizer. Cough into your sleeve. Even basic hygiene can go a long way! If people were to practice these habits, it could be influential to others around them and could help others adapt to these habits.

  1. Even though I'm not a mysophobe, I do think that people could exhibit better hygiene skills as well. I don't know how many times I've gotten the flu from someone who coughs without covering their mouth properly with their elbow. I do think another reason why people do this is because they're always in a rush. Some people think they don't have time to do simple hygienic activites, because they're worried about school or work or something. I think that's a good way of getting people to start with these habits, starting off with the basics is always easy for people to do.
