Being rude.
Just Speak English!! Please...
My friend and I were walking in the hallway to get to our next class, and we were conversing about something or at least trying to, but there were so many languages being spoken and it kept getting louder and louder that we forgot what language we spoke! It bugs me when students speak a different language at school because it’s disrespectful. They could be saying something about me without me even knowing. Also, they tend to get really loud when they talk which annoys me because it is as loud as it is at break time.
I am a pretty understanding person and I actually speak a second language so I understand when you want to get a sentence out really quickly so you say it in the language you feel comfortable speaking, but there are boundaries. What I mean by boundaries is, knowing when and where it is appropriate to speak a different language while living in Canada, especially when you are at school or work. Other people around you who don’t understand or speak your language may get offended because, really you could be saying anything about them and they wouldn’t have a clue, so things can easily be assumed and create problems.
I am not a racist person. I know I may seem like one but I’m not. I am just seeing this from a person who was born in Canada and raised in the Canadian culture. I of course also learned about the Portuguese culture, catholic religion, and the language because I am full Portuguese and even though I wasn’t born there, my parents were along with the rest of my family. My point is, even though my family speaks a different language at home and was raised in a different country, I still follow the Canadian way and expectations.
It’s a fact that I am not the only person in my school who feels this way. It is definitely a frustrating factor and tends to make people angry or annoyed. There are also a lot more immigrants who have moved to Winnipeg and settled in the Maples. The numbers are increasing which means the groups of people attending the school speaking anything BUT English is going to get bigger and louder! I have never confronted any of these people because it’s not my place to do that, but I have unfortunately seen other people get pretty angry and yell at them telling them to speak English, which is definitely not the way to handle the situation but it has happened. Since the number have been and will continue to increase, there should be something done so that everyone has their peace. I think it should be a rule to have to speak English at all times while in the building and we should build a commons area so that it gives more room for people to go so that there aren’t huge groups of people everywhere crowding the space. It isn’t a huge issue at the moment but I do believe it’s one of those things that gets over-looked then it becomes bigger when least expected.
This is gym class, not the summer olympics.
About a month ago in gym class, I remember when there were grade 12's and 10's all playing basketball. There were a couple of grade 12 boys who must have thought they were in the NBA or something and were probably trying their hardest against some grade 10 girls that were just standing around. I'm not sure what these guys felt they were accomplishing, but it had to have been something great with the amount of sweat they were putting into their games.
I can also recall about 6 months ago, I was at the Wellness Center working out when another incident happened where somebody showed their extreme competitive nature. After I had finished my initial workout, I decided to run on the treadmill to cool down. The person beside me apparently saw me as a threat to their manhood and decided that no matter what, they wouldn't be out done by me. At first, I didn't really notice but after a while I noticed that whenever I would raise the speed on my treadmill, they would look over and then raise theirs to a speed even higher than mine. I had never seen this person in my life and I was confused as to why they felt the need to do this. To make sure I knew exactly they were doing, I continued to raise the speed on my treadmill until we were both on a full out sprint. Thinking back, this must have been a ridiculous sight to see a 16 year old and someone who seemed to be in their mid-twenties basically racing each other on treadmills, but I didn't care at the time, because I wanted to make this guy look bad. Nothing was verbally said, but we both knew that it just became a contest to see who could last longer, but little did I know, this guy had used his alpha-male attitude to bring out the competitive side in me. Luckily for me, this guy had just played into my biggest strength, my advanced cardio. After about three minutes of straight sprinting, this guy had finally caved in and stopped sprinting. I thought I would feel great for beating this guy at his own game, but I instead had quite the opposite feeling. In the end I felt like a loser for allowing myself to get sucked into this guy's little competition. This left me wondering why he even felt the need to try and out do me in the first place.
I decided I would ask the guy at the Wellness what made him even want to try and beat me in a non-existent contest in the first place, but he was nowhere to be found.
I guess some people just need to constantly be reminded that they, at any time in any given location, are the best person there even if this is not true. They may be aware that it bothers other people, but just don't care because they're the best and no one can stand up to them.
I'd say that you are either born with this super competitive nature or you aren't. I'd say to stop being competitive, you just have to accept that nobody really cares if you're better than them at something so insignificant in life such as a high school gym class or a teenager running on a treadmill beside you.
Favors gone wild.
I'm sure everyone has experienced this situation at least once in their lives, but I always seem to encounter this situation. It's becoming an annoying problem. "Can I borrow a pencil?" simple favors like that are fine, but when a person asks multiple favors constantly is way too much for me to handle. A friend of mine constantly throws questions at me about my other friend. "Do you know where she is?", "What is she doing?", "What class does she have?", "Why isn't she replying to me?” I don't think the person realizes how annoying it is. I ask myself the same questions every day, "can the person ask someone else for once?" or, "can he just go and ask the person instead of me?" I'm not Albert Einstein! I don't know everything, nor can I read people's minds. Most of the time, I'm okay with favors, but when the person starts to always come to me and it becomes a routine I start to slowly get angry and annoyed.
I have never addressed the person directly, but I have always wanted to say something to the person who always comes to me. I have not ever said anything because I find it would be very harsh, and the person would take it the wrong way. I guess I'm too shy of a person to stand up and mention something to the person.
The main reasons why people only talk to someone when they need something are so that they won't encounter the situation themselves. "Oh, she can ask for me so nothing weird and awkward happens." The person can also be oblivious to what is going on, and have no idea what they're doing. They might also only behave like this to seek attention from others. People sometimes don't realize that this bothers others because they might be only thinking of themselves. They might not think before they ask for a favor, to borrow something, or to know something.
Some reasons why people act like this can be a simple factor like being lazy, or it can be a big factor such as the person being self-centered, only thinking of themselves. You can't prevent everyday situations from happening, but you can think ahead. The next time you go to someone when you need something, think of if you can deal with the situation yourself. Am I being a bother to the person? Or am I being lazy and can do this myself? This may not be the biggest deal to some people, but to me I can put this in my top five pet peeves.
Chain Messages
“Hi I’m Joanna if you stop reading this you’ll die in the next 10 mins.” --- Don’t you just hate it when someone on facebook, twitter, or tumblr sent you this kind of chain messages? Like the Smith sisters or the girl who killed herself because of bullying. This kind of messages irks me a lot.
It was late at night when I opened my facebook to check out some urgent message from a friend then suddenly something pops-out on my chat box. It’s a random message from someone that says “Don’t read this or else blah blah stuff.” As I read the whole message it has the story of a girl named Lily who is raped and killed by two young boys. They dumped her body in a old house in Kentucky. Now Lily’s body is haunting everyone who read this message, she will appear in front of you and join you while sleeping at exactly 3 am. After I read it I felt irritated because how can a dead body appear in front of me while I’m sleeping. People should stop believing in this kind of messages and why they bother sending them on it makes them look immature. What bugs me too is when I saw post on Facebook about Religion, Jesus vs. Devil I mean seriously you are posting stuff that put Jesus’s name in vain just to be popular.
umm...did you ask?
On many occurrences i have come home to see my sister on my bed, with my blankets and pillows, when she has her own. She also likes to wear my socks, and takes them without asking, which is equally, if not more, annoying due to the fact that when i am getting ready, i am not able to find one pair of socks because she has worn them all. I have addressed my sister many times about taking my stuff without asking first, probably on a daily basis actually, but to this day she is still wearing my socks. Another situation occurred in the tenth grade, where i had to go to my locker and i had just left my pencil on the table, not thinking anything about it.
When i got back the pencil was gone, which was really just irritating because i was expecting to just get back to work as soon as i got back to class. By the end of class, i found it across the room being used by a group of guys. I simply went over to them and asked where they got it from and if i could have it back. I did end up getting the pencil back, and i know that it is just a pencil, but can't people just ask first?!
I think that people have a tendency to "borrow" objects without asking first because they may not think about it, that if something is left unattended it is just free to take. Or maybe they simply think that the person that the object belongs to simply wont mind if they just take it without asking. Although, in the case of my sister, she just takes/uses my stuff without asking because i tell her not to. After all, what else would younger sisters be good for if not to be annoying, and act like they don't have ears.
Factors that may contribute to this behavior may be obliviousness, due to the fact that people don't think about what the owner might feel or think. I don't think that the person taking is aware that it is bothersome to the person whom they are taking from, because if they did know, then they wouldn't take without asking. People may be dissuaded from committing this action if someone took something of theirs without asking first, but thinking about it, I think that this has happened to everyone multiple times, and people still choose to take, so I'm not sure what the ultimate dissuading factor might be.
At the end of the day, there will always be someone taking, and someone looking for what was taken, because this isn't exactly a perfect world, but would it kill to ask first?!?
Don't drink and take the bus
During last summer, I was on my way to work early in the morning. When the bus was passing through Downtown, a short middle-aged man stumbled on the bus. The bus is fairly empty at the time, but this man chose to come all the way to the back and sit beside me. He intended on staring a conversation with me right away. If it wasn't bad enough that I am on a bus with a heavy odor lingering around early in the morning, now I have a drunk person who will not stop talking to me. His breath made the bus odor seem like roses and his body odor did not help the situation.
I could not really make out what he was saying but from the few words I did recognize it seemed that he was talking about pirates. Every one in a while he would turn around and yell "Aaarghh", the stench from his breath would smack me right in face.
For the first few minutes I tried to be as polite as possible but as time went on he really started to get on my last nerves. He tried to make me laugh by telling me jokes but I didn't find this very interesting. Being nice I kindly responded with a smile on my face. This went on for about ten minutes or so. At one point it looked like he was going to throw up. As he leaned over gagging, I immediately rang the bell to get off at the next bus stop. I was relieved to have gotten off the bus but I was about ten blocks away from work.
The reason I didn't do anything was because I felt bad for the guy and didn't want to make a big scene in the bus. Sure I could have done something in the moment, but seeing as he was intoxicated, I didn't want the situation to escalate into something big. I am sure he had no idea what he was doing and he probably does not remember a second of it.
Obviously the cause in this situation was alcohol but more specifically the amount of it and given the place and time. This can be avoided by simply not drinking at all or just not drinking on a regular basis. There is a time and place for everything and being drunk on the bus in the morning is not an option. So the message I am trying to send out is that it can be fun to drink but their has to be a line to how much and maybe some more strict laws should be introduced about being intoxicated in public.
