Ask, Assume, Annoying
Why ask if you're already reaching for it? By the time I even begin to think yes or no you've already taken what you asked for! Why bother to even ask in the first place? The feeling that anyone can just take things from you and think it's okay because they asked; give me a chance to answer. This habit of just assuming the answer is always yes needs to stop.
Last Friday I was sitting across from my friend in class and I see her reach for my binder and ask "Can I have a piece of loose leaf?" I would've gladly said sure but I didn't have a chance to, it seemed like there was no need for me to say anything when you're already writing you're name in the top right corner.
It's difficult not to confront the people who demonstrate this behavior, or should I say commit this crime I mean you're technically stealing, it is after all taking without permission. I was studying at my friend's house just the other day and I'm listening to music, in my 'study mode' and out of no where I feel my pen pulled out of my hand and I hear her say "Can I use this for a sec?" I guess the stress and the fact that my patience was wearing thin made me sound kind of rude; I gave her a confused looked and say "uh no." She paused for a second and then laughed. I had to say "just kidding" but she knew what I meant and it was awkward and quiet for a couple of seconds afterwards.
I can understand why some people absentmindedly make this a habit when they ask things from close friends, siblings, just someone they know really well enough they feel like the person can't say no. It may seem like no big deal because they usually just take little things or use things really quickly then return it, but can you imagine how awkward it'd be to put back food that was just two inches from your mouth? Not saying anyone would actually say "no give it back" but questions are meant to be answered, permission is meant to be granted and simply asking while you're taking something doesn't cut it. I suggest people be more patient and wait for an answer or the patience of the victim to this behavior will wear thin.
