A Bunch of DEAD Ears

Doesn't it piss you off when you realize you are having a one-sided conversation? It's like the words pouring out your mouth don't even reach the person, inches away from you. If that's the case, I'm 100% positive that he's a bad listener - a person with dead ears.

I seriously dislike these type of people. They make me feel that I am such a boring gal. What's worse, it seems like they don't care about me. Whenever I express my thoughts or my opinion, they suddenly shut down and seemed to be completely lost in la la land. Although they try their best to "fake listen", I'm still disappointed. The worst part is when they give you simple nods or say "oh" like they're assuring you they've understood. In some situations, there are these self absorbed people who acts like they know everything. Also, another type of a bad listener is someone who never listens to any one's opinion or let them share their personal stories. Great. Just great.

Once, I had a pretty bad experience with a friend. We both went to different schools so we had a bunch of things to catch up with. As we started a conversation, she talked about her new, cool life and some of her passions. It was interesting; I can tell you. But as she started going farther off topic, I lost hope in sharing mine. Even though she would pause for a bit, I just couldn't barge in. She picked up too much momentum; the mood was too good and I knew she was having a good time.

Unintentionally, she made a point that she's not interested with my own stories, although it has never been said. I actually never had a chance to say what I felt that day. My laughter and my full attention was what she wanted from me. Realizing this, I guess she just made that conversation because she needs someone who would take interest in her. Obviously, that someone was me.

Some people engage in this kind of behaviour because: one, they aren't interested in the topic. I guess they have better things to think about rather than listening or interacting with anyone. Or maybe their minds are just too crowded to process the words. They might be in the middle of a predicament; you might never know. Or two, they have tons of thoughts to share that they were not aware of their misbehaviour. But from what I've learned, a conversation should be working both ways: listening and talking. If one doesn't exist, it wouldn't be spontaneous. So, as a tentative listener, if you fall on the second kind, I suggest go talk to a wall. I bet you can learn something from it.

  2. This is so true. I have a friend that also doesn't wait until I finish talking. Once I was talking to my friend and then out of nowhere he came and interrupted me while I was in the middle of my sentence. Over all your post was amazing. You explained it really well and got a good point across.
